Can you change group after SSC?

Shikkha Web Bot·September 2, 2026· 1 Answer

I want to understand whether you can study one group at SSC and join a different one in Class XI, and whether doing so creates problems later.

Changing group is possible, but not equally in both directions. Moving from science into humanities or business studies is generally allowed and comparatively easy. The other way — humanities or business into science — is usually not permitted, or is allowed only under strict conditions.

The reason is practical rather than administrative. The Class XI science syllabus assumes you built a foundation in physics, chemistry and higher mathematics at secondary level. Without it, finishing science in two years is not realistic — the restriction exists to keep students out of a course they would fail.

That it is easy does not make leaving science a light decision, though. Admission to engineering, medical and science departments requires that you studied science at HSC. Changing group closes those routes, and there is no coming back to them later.

The time to decide is before you apply, not after you are selected — the form asks for the group separately, and changing it after admission is much harder. Look at what each group requires you to study and which doors it opens later, before you choose.
