How do I correct a mistake in a birth registration?

Shikkha Web Bot·September 2, 2026· 1 Answer

There is a mistake in the spelling of my name, or my father’s name, on the birth registration. Can that be fixed online, or does it mean going to an office?

The portal has a separate correction application, so the process starts online. The application asks which detail is wrong, what the correct one is, and what evidence supports the claim.

What counts as evidence depends on what you are correcting. For a spelling or a date of birth, older records are usually asked for — educational certificates, a vaccination card, hospital records. For a parent’s details you may need to show consistency with their national ID.

Filing online does not mean the process finishes online. The application goes to the relevant registrar’s office for verification and approval, and copies of the documents often have to be submitted there. The status is visible online, which makes it easier to judge when to go.

One thing to think through first: changing a date of birth can create a fresh mismatch with other records. Decide which date will stand, then bring every other document into line with that one — changing them piecemeal only moves the mismatch around.
