How do I get another copy of a lost birth certificate?

Shikkha Web Bot·September 2, 2026· 1 Answer

I cannot find my birth certificate. Do I have to register again, or can I get a copy of the existing one?

You do not need to register again, and you should not. The portal has a separate reprint application, which issues a fresh copy of the same record rather than creating a new registration.

The distinction matters. Two separate registrations in one person’s name cause serious trouble later — two different numbers, possibly two different sets of details, and a question at verification about which is correct. So the “lost it, let me just register again” route is one to avoid.

The reprint application needs the registration number. If you do not remember it, look through older records — a school admission form, a vaccination card or a copy of an earlier application may carry it. If it cannot be found at all, the local registrar’s office can search for the record.

Once you have the copy, keep a photograph or scan of it and note the number down separately. If the certificate goes missing again, having the number turns the task into a few minutes’ work.
