Why do earthquakes happen?

Earthquakes occur due to the movement of rock inside the Earth, where energy accumulates from the collision, shifting, or pushing of tectonic plates. When this accumulated energy exceeds what the rock's structure and position can withstand, it creates vibrations on the Earth's surface. In Bangladesh, earthquakes are mainly caused by the collision of the Indian Plate and the Burmese Plate, especially in the Chattogram and Chattogram Hill Tracts regions. The junctions of these plates lie in the Madhabdi, Sylhet, Chattogram, and Mymensingh regions, where earthquake energy keeps accumulating. Experts say these regions face the risk of major earthquakes in the future, which could cause disaster in Dhaka and various other parts of the country.
